wrote in message # # # should have asked this in my last reply...are you sure the rifle is # # made by Winchester, or is the receiver _style_d like a Winchester? # # I've looked at an old Gun Digest (1983) and found the Browning BLR # # ($394.95 in '83)to be closest to your de_script_ion. All the Winchester # # lever rifles have tube mags. # # # I'm sure there are a lot of Winchester model 1895 owners out there that # would question your # All Winchester lever rifles have tube mags statement! # # The OP's rifle is some version of the model 88 Winchester. Magazine fed, # lever action, # made from 1955 to 1973 in several variations. Indeed... Model 88 is stamped on the barrel in front of the receiver. I found an exploded diagram of it:
http://www.urban-armory.com/diagrams/win88.htm I fired it today (25 rounds for zeroing) for the first time in about 20 years... Kicks like a mule but not too painful if you hold it right.

There were 15 rounds of old ammo with it, I used them up first. 3 of them refused to feed. The next 10 rounds of new Federal SW .308 fed in perfect. Good grouping, it shoots slightly high at this point (about 2 ) but still in the black so I think I'm good to go... I have a deer hunting invite.
