Nuclear power plants won't (generally speaking) run away if unattended. The opertors at Chernoble had to a *lot* of things dead wrong to get the results they got, and much of the resulting problem was the graphite fire they got, not a runaway nuclear reaction. So far as I know, the USSR was the only country that built graphite-cored power reactors. We built graphite reactors in the US, but we never (to my knowledge) used them for power. Graphite cores make very efficient breeder reactors, for producing material to manufacture nuclear weapons. I don't know if we stopped using the graphite reactors, or just converted them to a safer mechanism, after Chernobyl. I live in farm country. If the world died around me, I'd find the most self-sufficient farm I could

Would you try to contact other people? How? Would I? I don't know. If it's a couple of hundred people in the US, I don't think that a search would be really feasible. But if the character doesn't know it's only a couple of hundred people, I suppose they might be looking for others. vlatko

One of the 'better' things to say about sprawl, is that in the event of a cataclsym, they will have just as much sources of supply as a city, with less risk. From workshops, to stores, the surburban communities are the best and safest bet. If, and only if, you can keep a vehicle running. This won't be a problem for the first six months

So far as I know, the USSR was the only country that built graphite-cored power reactors. IIRC the UK used graphite-cored reactors at Windscale in the 1940's and early 1950's for plutonium production and experimentation

From workshops, to stores, the surburban communities are the best and safest bet. If, and only if, you can keep a vehicle running. Why does this need to be a gasoline powered vehicle? Locally I wouldn't need it to make a run to the nearest supermarket; it's only about a kilometer
