This may not be the best place to ask this = but I'm sure someone here knows the answer.    As those of us who now have DSL know, we are now able to get downloads with lots of action .  At what point would users be able to get TV Quality downloads via the web? We can now get good audio from radio stations around the world.  (Even regular modems can handle this pretty well.)  How much more capacity would be needed to get TV signals from anywhere?  Could T-1 or T-3 handle it?  If DSL increased from the maximum of 1.5meg to some higher number - what would that number need to be?    Thanks.    ...mike

to some higher number - what would that number need to be?   Thanks.   ...mike depending on the compression algorthm(mpeg1, mpeg2,_layer_3, none at all) in any case there would be a need for real time decompression at the host end.  of course if there was no compression you would need about 300MB/s to get HDTV raw footage.  If you use a software decompressor like Real or any of the web streaming stuff, you notice it isn't very exciting because the signals have been completely @#$@#$!ed to stream thru a slow connection. I've never ran into a site that streams at 1.5mbps, but when multicast routers get thrown all over the place this should hopefully change and we could see more pseudo-mbps streaming.

I've seen 800kbps video, and that was nowhere near broadcast tv, so I doubt that 1.5mbps would help enough to make internet-tv an alternative to the 'real thing'... Depends on the format. QuickTime can get a 480x360 movie @ 24fps w/ 16 bit, 44kHz sound down to 108.5K/s using Sorenson for video compression and QDesign for audio. Requires G3 or PII or better to play decently though. Not quite broadcast TV, but when displayed on most TV screens you'd never notice. Most game consoles get away with 320x240 after all.

From the DVD FAQ: Maximum video bitrate is 9.8 Mbps. The average bitrate is 3.5 but depends entirely on the length, quality, amount of audio, etc. This is a 36:1 reduction from uncompressed 124 Mbps (or a 28:1 reduction from 100 Mbps film source Assuming that DVD is good approximation of the 'real thing', that means you need at least 3.5Mbps if you use MPEG2, more if you want to be able to handle arbitrary content.

The MPhase Traverser from www.mphase.com needs about 6.7 mps.  I sent them email becuase they claim that you can TV/internet/phone on the same line. If you have a 7mb/s DSL connection....lol

If you have a 7mb/s DSL connection....lol hah!  I can routinely get ftp speeds of 1MB/s from school to home, but this is quite a jam... I'd say you need at least 100mb lan speeds to do any of the real stuff.
