PY: A solo home run is 4 total _base_s for the home run king and totally insignificant if your team loses 2-1. 4 singles is 4 total _base_s and beefs up the batting average, but totally insignificant if your team loses 2-1. 4 stolen _base_s beefs up the stolen _base_ total for the SB king, but totally insignificant if your team loses 2-1. 4 strikeouts in 4 at-bats looks terrible in the box score, but it's totally insignificant if your team wins 2-1. 4 errors is several points off your fielding percentage, but it's totally insignificant if your team wins 2-1. See where I'm going here?  We can use your logic everywhere.  Fact of the matter is my p_layer_'s home run got his team within 1 run of the other team. How do you calculate OBP, Mr. Van? As a rule, you look it up. STATS Red and Green books will give you the yearly OPS for every p_layer_ who played in AA or above last year.  ESPN, CNN/SI, etc. online, will give you MLB p_layer_s, of course. For p_layer_s who played in A or rookie ball, you have to look at the Green Book each year.  Or you can grab the Super Register, which doesn't list OBP for space reasons, and estimate it by (H+B / (AB+B.  Which takes about 10 seconds with a calculator or spreadsheet. If a newsstand magazine doesn't list OBP, you know it's clueless in terms of p_layer_ evaluations. For older p_layer_s, all the encylopedias list OBP.  For their minor league careers, going back beyond the Green book debut (1992) you have to use the Sporting News _base_ball Guide, which didn't list OBP because the wide acceptance of it as the best stat hadn't happened yet.  But it's pretty easy to calculate it from the raw data; it takes about 20 seconds with a calculator.
