I don't want to reopen this discussion but I want to answer Osiris' question whether the hair of the mummies gets softer or straighter by time. No it doesn't because the the mummy of Maiherpre KV36, who thought to be a 26 yr old male from the royal nursery, had a cotton-like hair, small afro if you will. He also appeared 'black' (skin wise) in his funerary papayri which shows that he was probabley more of a Nubian looking. I also found another portrait from the greco roman period with what seems to be soft, straight hair, which shows that variation in hair types, as well as in complections, existed all along in Egypt:
