The head of Maiduguri University's student union, Baba Shehu, told AFP that trouble broke out late on Saturday when Muslim students attacked a venue where they suspected a beauty parade was being held. Officials of northeastern university had earlier banned a Thursday night end-of-term gala after _object_ions from Muslims that a planned parade of young women would be offensive, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. But on Saturday, students of English language and literature held a scaled-down, invitation-only event which provoked rumours that the pageant had been revived and held behind closed doors, Shehu said. The mob attacked with sticks and clubs. Those beaten were mainly women attending the party, Shehu said. This incensed the Christian students, who decided to counterattack. According to Shehu and Musa Idris, a reporter with Borno State television, a gang of Christian students attacked the main campus mosque during morning prayers on Sunday, sparking running battles. Faruk Zubair, the Muslim son of the secretary to the university's vice-chancellor, was beaten and later died of his injuries, both men said. Maiduguri University authorities have now closed down the campus until after Ramadan, and heavily armed riot police are patrolling the area. Tensions often run high between northern Nigerian Muslims and the region's Christian minority, especially during Ramadan. The Maiduguri University riot will revive memories of last year's unrest triggered by an aborted attempt to bring the Miss World beauty contest to Nigeria during Ramadan, which left more than 220 people dead. http://iafrica.com/news/worldnews/282738.htm

Oh not this *again*.   When the Miss World pageant showed up in Nigeria last year, the Nigerian Muslims went on a killing spree, driving the contest out.  Some folks were lucky to get out alive. I can't believe anyone in their right mind would even think about staging such a contest there in the foreseeable future. Don't these people ever learn?

Yer half right.  This riot, like the riot there last year, is black-on-black, as Nigeria is 99.9% black.  Black Muslims (who liive mainly in the north) v black Christians (who live mainly in the south).
