The Los Angeles Daily News Wednesday, June 19, 2002 Wynonna Judd seeing light at the end of a hard road By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith It's been a hard road, says Wynonna Judd, but the multiplatinum-selling songstress believes she's finally seeing the positive results of the sweeping changes she started making in 2000 - when she sold her farm and car, and got rid of her wardrobe, furniture and many long-cherished possessions. I had a lot of loss and a lot of change, she tells us. There was a wake-up call in our family. We went through a real hard time, but it caused us to pull together and re-establish our priorities - that it's not about business, it's about real life. The wake-up call? Mom and Pop, when she filed for divorce, says Wynonna, referring to the marital rupture between her mother, Naomi, and stepfather, Larry Strickland - who also served as Wynonna's manager. But they reconciled, and it caused us all to start talking - and remember that what matters most is the personal relationships. At the same time, Wynonna was struggling to come to terms with learning that her biological father had died and she'd never met him. That got me on this whole journey of thinking about who I am. That journey, she feels, has led her to a kind of rebirth - in herself and her music. Wynonna's mom and sister Ashley were among the family members on hand to cheer her on as she rocked the house with a mini concert at Disney's Lilo & Stitch Hollywood premiere. Included were her scorching versions of Elvis Presley's Burnin' Love and Don't Be Cruel - which are on the soundtrack for the quirky animated flick about a Hawaiian girl and her destructive alien friend. Wynonna is in the midst of recording a full album of rock 'n' roll and gospel music now, with a targeted fall release. On the personal side, Wynonna's home-schooling her two children from her former marriage. And she and her love and former bodyguard, Dan Roach, are making wedding plans - for next year. HARD GUY: With his gritty and profane F/X The Shield having become a critical rage - and the cause of outrage - this season, Michael Chiklis is finding it's a brave new world in terms of projects he's being offered. It's funny and fun, he says of sifting through prospects for work during his series hiatus - which lasts until late September. The actor, who lost his cuddly Daddio image when he became the hard-bodied, hard-boiled Shield cop, tells us he's also getting different fan response than he used to get. The other day, my wife and I were at a mall, and some woman comes up to her and says, 'Is he mean to you?' 'No!' Chiklis, who had his family with him at the lavish Lilo & Stitch post-screening luau, reports that initial advertiser dropout from his series hasn't been a problem. For every advertiser we lost, we had a half dozen lining up to take their place, he said. I think F/X has aired it responsibly, in an adult time slot with a warning. A FAMILY AFFAIR: Wynton Marsalis reports that the first family of jazz will be heading out on a tour next year. It's going to be my father, Ellis Marsalis, on piano, my older brother Branford playing saxophone, my younger brother Delfeayo on trombone, and my other younger brother, Jason, on the drums, says Wynton, who stirred up the crowd at the 24th annual Playboy Jazz Festival with his stellar septet last weekend at the Hollywood Bowl. When asked if there are plans to record or document the Marsalis family tour, he quips, My daddy tells me what to do. BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN: Now that he's on hiatus from NYPD Blue, Mark-Paul Gosselaar says he's back doing what he loves best - motocross racing. I'm training for the Mammoth Mountain Motocross coming up in June, reports Gosselaar, who's received rave reviews for his first season on Blue and is being pushed for Emmy consideration. It's something I've been going to for years, and the one thing I definitely don't miss out on. Gosselaar doesn't ride during the shooting season of NYPD Blue because I didn't want to put myself in a position to get hurt, out of respect to the cast and crew. ... Plus I'd get my butt kicked by Bill Clark, the executive producer. He's a retired detective, and I know for sure if I were in traction, he'd whack me around a little. With reports by Stephanie DuBois and Erick Johnson. The Celebrities column appears Monday through Thursday. The New York Times Wednesday, June 19, 2002 BOLDFACE NAMES Mayflower Meets Gilligan's Isle By JAMES BARRON What was notable yesterday was not what JOHN W. DEAN said, but who heard him say it. It was hardly the first time that Mr. Dean, the White House counsel in the Nixon administration, explained how he had narrowed the list of people who might have been Deep Throat, the secret Watergate source for BOB WOODWARD and CARL BERNSTEIN of The Washington Post. But yesterday, 30 years and one day after the burglary that eventually brought down Richard M. Nixon's presidency, Mr. Dean faced one of those only-in-New-York crowds. GEORGE S. McGOVERN, who lost to Nixon in a landslide in 1972, was seated next to TINA LOUISE from Gilligan's Island and a couple of seats away from SYDNEY BIDDLE BARROWS, who was nicknamed the Mayflower Madam in the 1980's. Elsewhere in the Michael Jordan Steakhouse in Grand Central Terminal were LUCIANNE S. GOLDBERG, the book agent associated with the Linda Tripp tapes during the scandal that led to the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton; ARTHUR SCHLESINGER, the historian; and WILLIAM J. BRATTON, the former police commissioner. Mr. Dean told HAROLD EVANS, a consulting editor of The Week, the magazine that organized the lunch, that he had settled on four possibilities: STEPHEN BULL, who was Nixon's personal assistant; RAYMOND K. PRICE JR., Nixon's chief speechwriter; PATRICK J. BUCHANAN, a special assistant; and RON ZIEGLER, Nixon's press secretary. Mr. Price said later that he had declined an invitation to the lunch and had done his own detective work to try to figure out who Deep Throat was. Mr. Bull said he had not met Mr. Woodward and Mr. Bernstein until Monday, when he was backstage at a cable-television show. CHRIS MATTHEWS walks in and says, `Bull, why are you here?' The unspoken answer is, `I'm here to deny ever having met these two guys.' Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Ziegler did not return calls for comment yesterday. Steely Teeth, Vulgar Mouth For sheer acreage, the red carpet outside the Ziegfeld Theater for the premiere of the STEVEN SPIELBERG thriller Minority Report would be hard to beat. It stretched down 54th Street and was lined by three-row bleachers filled with fans who had been assigned seats through a radio promotion. Of course, the fans were separated, by a well-constructed barricade, from stars like TOM CRUISE, above, who was with his girlfriend, PENÉLOPE CRUZ. But even from behind the barricade, one could have seen Mr. Cruise's braces whenever he flashed a smile, which was often. When a television reporter asked what had run through his mind earlier in the day, when KATIE COURIC zoomed in for a close-up of his mouth, he said, Enter there at your own risk. And then there was COLIN FARRELL, who also stars in Minority Report. Somebody back at the station probably had to bleep out 50 percent of what he said to the television camera crews. I've never seen anything like this, man, he began, looking at the crowd. Then, a sentence with a word that needed bleeping. Then, a sentence that was printable but ungrammatical: What's the Oscars like if this is like this? Coiffures Fit for Marines First MATT LAUER, then MAURY POVICH: What was it that caused the television personalities to get shorter-than-short haircuts? Mr. Povich's wife, CONNIE CHUNG, got her first look at his new look at a party on Monday for her new program on CNN (the premiere is Monday). Somehow, he had arrived without her seeing what the hairstylist had wrought. So she threaded her way through a crowd that included many of her new colleagues at CNN, among them LARRY KING, LOU DOBBS and AARON BROWN. It's too short, Ms. Chung said. This was before the good-luck speeches from CNN executives and the Chungian ritual: an off-key reworking of a Broadway song. Ms. Chung turned Get Me to the Church on Time from My Fair Lady into Get Me to the `Get' on Time. In television jargon, a reporter has a get when he or she lands a big-name interview. The Boston Globe NAMES Ushering in a Knight at the Palace; ushering out an era at Cheers By Carol Beggy and Stephanie Stoughton, Globe Staff, 6/18/2002 WELL, MAYBE HER LOVE DON'T COST A THING Cris Judd, the soon-to-be ex-Mr. Jennifer Lopez, was in town over the weekend to catch R&B star Usher 's show at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield and was spotted tooling around town with ex-New Kid on the Block Jordan Knight. Judd, a professional dancer who has worked with several big-name performers before hooking up with J.Lo, danced with Knight when the latter did a solo tour a few years ago. The duo took in the concert, then headed north to Saugus for Usher's after-party at the Palace, where they hooked up with the gang from that FM hip-hop powerhouse, radio station ''Jam'n'' 94.5. While at the Palace, Knight danced a little, but apparently Judd left his moves at home. ... On Sunday, Judd, Knight, and Knight's young son had a late lunch at Charley's on Newbury Street, where Judd sampled the signature clam chowder. When asked by one of the waiters if he was Lopez's husband, Judd said yes, which probably explains why he was still wearing a diamond-encrusted wedding band. The duo attracted a bit of notice, but Judd seemed to take it all in stride. When lunch was over, Judd signed the meal check ''Best Wishes, Cris Judd.'' THE TIMES OF THE SIGN With little fanfare, the famed Bull & Finch sign was taken down yesterday from the Beacon Street location where it had hung for nearly 33 years. ''I thought it was time to retire the jersey,'' said Tom Kershaw, owner of the bar that was the inspiration for the ''Cheers'' TV show. ''When [former Boston Bruin] Ray Bourque stopped playing, they retired his jersey.'' Over the years, Kershaw has been offered a lot of money for the sign, but he says he will hang it downstairs in the pub so folks can still have their pictures taken with it. ''It's a huge attraction, but it will remain here,'' he said. So why take it down? The pub was originally called the Bull & Finch but changed its name after the TV show brought people to the area looking for Cheers. When Kershaw opened a second Cheers in the Faneuil Hall Marketplace a little over a year ago, he decided he needed a new way to refer to the two locations. ''So we call them Original Cheers and Replica Cheers,'' Kershaw said. But the original sign remains, even if everyone doesn't know its name - now you'll just have to look for it inside the tourist hot spot. SHINING LINEUP FOR THE MOHEGAN SUN Even more names have been added to the already-star-studded lineup for the grand opening celebration of the $1 billion expansion of the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn. New to the list: Academy Award-winning actress Marisa Tomei, singer Wyclef Jean, life_style_s-of-the-terribly-rich-and-amazingly-famous reporter Robin Leach, singer Marc Anthony, actor Tony Lo Bianco, film director Spike Lee, Dawn-less crooner Tony Orlando, actor Justin Chambers, Victoria's Secret model Ines Rivera, musician Tico Torres( Jon Bon Jovi 's drummer), ''Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'' star Mariska Hargitay, and guitarist Nils Lofgren. Previously announced attendees, confirmed yesterday, are Patti LaBelle, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, talk mistress Ricki Lake, and Chris Kirkpatrick of 'N Sync. Jasper White, Boston's original celebrity chef, will host a luncheon for the bold and the beautiful over the opening weekend at his chichi eatery in the casino. A REAL ELVIS SIGHTING Elvis Costello may have played only one sold-out concert while in town, but the singer-songwriter was all over the region during his stop. On Friday night he played to a full house at the FleetBoston Pavilion on the waterfront, and he stopped by sponsor WBOS-FM for a 45-minute interview with radio jock Neal Robert between his sound check and an appearance at Newbury Comics. But it was on Thursday that Costello caused a stir in the North Shore town of Rowley, where he filmed a video for his next single, ''45.'' While filming on Jellison Road, Costello included three local kids in his video - 10-year-old Aubrial Polisky and her brother, 7-year-old C.J., and C.J.'s friend Zach Stone, 8, all of Beverly. The three were chosen after word spread that Costello's film crew was scouting locations and local talent. Stone's parents took the kids to meet the crew, and they were selected for the video. SIX DEGREES OF PROVINCETOWN Power acting couple Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick were spotted over the weekend enjoying themselves - with kids in tow - walking along Commercial Street. Also in town was original ''Survivor'' winner Richard Hatch heading into a nightclub. Yes, he was clothed. A WELCOME WAGON Superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli 's dressing room was packed after his concert at the FleetCenter Sunday night, but Maggie Cupp stood out. Cupp, producer of all the ''Joey & Maria's Comedy Italian Wedding'' and ''The Sopranos Last Supper'' dinner shows, flew in from Los Angeles on Sunday morning to see the show. Cupp didn't come empty-handed. She and Comedy Connection owner Bill Blumenreich(a good friend of Bocelli's producer Frank Russo) gave the singer a huge gift basket filled with Italian food specialties. They were able to attend the concert without having to carry the gift basket the whole evening thanks to Mike Gay, owner of Plaza Limousine - the company that often squires around the Red Sox - who took care of the concert attendees and the basket in return for nothing more than a Bocelli handshake. STARGAZING The wife of ''Stone Cold'' Steve Austin has accused the wrestling star of beating her after an argument at their home in an upscale San Antonio neighborhood, police said yesterday. Debra Williams, also a pro wrestler, called police to the couple's home Saturday night and told officers Austin had beaten her on the head, back, and legs, then stormed out of the house before police arrived. She has not filed a formal charge, so he is not considered a fugitive.... Jennifer Lopez has signed a merchandising and licensing deal with San Francisco-_base_d Signatures Network to market J.Lo-related items, including greeting cards, calendars, and back-to-school items. She also has a new fragrance debuting in the fall.... Britney Spears was booed by fans after calling off a concert Friday in Lubbock, Texas, after the arena experienced a power outage. After two songs, Spears's management announced the show was over, citing safety concerns. Names can be reached at names at globe.com or at 617-929-8253. This story ran on page E2 of the Boston Globe on 6/18/2002. NAMES Helping save a precious house; planning a Jewel of a pool party By Carol Beggy & Stephanie Stoughton, Globe Staff, 6/19/2002 FIRST LADY MAKES LITERARY TOUR First lady Laura Bush will be honored tomorrow night by Boston-_base_d Reach Out and Read, a national group she has supported since her husband became governor of Texas. While she's in town, Bush will stop in Concord to give a boost to the efforts to preserve Orchard House, the ancestral home of ''Little Women'' author Louisa May Alcott. Reach Out and Read, which gives children books through medical offices and hospitals, will honor Bush at a ceremony at the Seaport Hotel that will also honor some of the group's other longterm benefactors, including founder Dr. Barry Zuckerman, Mellon Financial Corp. (New England CEO David Lamere will accept), Verizon  Mary Beth Bardin accepting), and TNT Travel founders Joan and Steve Belkin. (In an interesting twist of good causes making for strange fellow honorees, the Belkins have been longtime supporters of Al Gore.) Others expected to attend Thursday night include Boston Ballet principal dancer Simon Ball, former Fidelity fund manager Jeff Vinik and his wife, Penny, and CapeAIR owners Grant and Helene Wilson, said Lisa Marks Schwarz, event chairwoman. In Concord, the local supporters of Orchard House have been gearing up for the visit, which included a stop in the last couple of days by the Secret Service, causing a bit of a stir in a usually quiet part of the historic town. Bush, who also serves as honorary national chairwoman of the Save America's Treasures program, which recently gave the Orchard House a $400,000 grant, will bring an impressive lineup of federal and historic preservation types for the Concord tour. So how'd the Alcott fans get Bush to stop by? Turns out the literacy-minded Bush is a big fan, too. ''Little Women'' was apparently among the first books her mother read to her as a child. AND THE AUDIENCE AWARD GOES TO... It's film festival season in the region's summer hot spots (Newport was two weeks ago, Provincetown was last weekend, and Nantucket opens later this week.) So there are loads on interesting films in the area and a lot of celebrity sightings. But the most interesting part of film festivals is often the audience awards. The final tally at the Provincetown International Film Festival was completed late yesterday afternoon, and the winners of the HBO Audience Awards were: in the feature-film category, Cassandra Peterson 's ''Elvira's Haunted Hills''; in the documentary category, Deborah Dickson 's ''Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House''; and in the short-film category, ''Toilet Treatments'' by Provincetown visual artist Jay Critchley, and ''Off Season,'' which local director Casey Clark shot entirely in P-town. It was that category that gummed up the works: The two shorts tied. Although they are separate films, they shared a screening, so voters reported confusion over what they were voting for. (Think Florida ballots meet the film festival circuit.) The festival and sponsor HBO decided yesterday to give both filmmakers an award. In the ''touching'' category, you could find Peterson - that's Elvira herself - and her husband, who were truly moved to be given the honor. Noting that they had never won any award - not even for bad acting - Peterson said she and her husband put every penny they had into making the horror flick, which was filmed in Romania. STIFF LITTLE FINE He never got into the weekend performance of Irish rockers Stiff Little Fingers at the Paradise. But an underage patron who was busted by Boston Police for using a fake ID to enter the 18-plus show paid the $25 fine and returned later on the night of the concert to see if he could catch a glimpse of the band or his friends who got in to see the show. When word got back to the band, the four members, plus fan Brian Packard, all ponied up $5 apiece to give to the young scofflaw. We doubt he'll use the money to pay the fine, since the band members autographed the bills beforehand. ''He's not exactly public enemy number one, is he?'' said Jake Burns, the band's lead guitarist and vocalist. Asked by a reporter why they would pitch in to bail the kid out, Burns said: ''It's our fault the poor bugger's in there in the first place.'' ... Late last week, when Stiff Little Fingers had a little time to kill, the members took an informal tour of some of Boston's better Irish pubs, where they were often told that their ''money was no good.'' NO POOL FOR JEWEL Folk-pop singer Jewel plans to perform at a ''Mix 98.5'' private pool party just a few feet from the Colonnade Hotel's rooftop pool. But we hear there are no plans for a swim. when she fell from a horse at her beau's Texas ranch in April, Jewel broke her collarbone and a rib. So the pre_script_ion is: Take it easy in the sun. (We hope she is at least permitted to dip her toes if it's crazy muggy hot outside.) The little shindig takes place Sunday, before Jewel's nighttime performance at FleetBoston Pavilion. Names can be reached at names at globe.com or at 617-929-8253. This story ran on page D2 of the Boston Globe on 6/19/2002. The Chicago Sun-Times Tuesday, June 18, 2002 Richards has that just-married Sheen By Bill Zwecker Asked if he would ever remarry, Charlie Sheen once joked with this column, ''Who would have me?'' Well, that question was answered with a resounding ''I will'' Saturday as Downers Grove native Denise Richards, 29, became the 36-year-old Sheen's second wife in an evening ceremony at the Los Angeles home of Gary David Goldberg, producer of the ABC sitcom ''Spin City.'' Sheen had replaced Michael J. Fox on the comedy, after Fox's battle with Parkinson's disease forced him to leave the show. Though the series was canceled, Sheen did win a Golden Globe as best actor in a comedy series earlier this year. Sheen's reputation as a swinging bachelor had become Hollywood lore in his former partying days. Among his many exploits was his alleged top billing as Heidi Fleiss' best customer
