typed: Flanders' and Swann's 1950s song A Transport of Delight contained the words If tickets cost a Pound apiece, why should we make a fuss? It's worth it just to ride inside that........ London Transport... omnibus. Whoda thunk that less than 50 years later it would be a pound a ride, and on the same old Routemasters! (A fourpenny one would take you a long way in them days.) That forty foot long by nine foot wide, 97 horsepower, diesel engined, London Transport omnibus! Don't forget: that monarch of the road, observer of the Highway Code, that big six-wheeler, scarlet painted, with a great big hard on, full of puss! Six wheelers date from when the max length of a four wheeler was allowed was 27 feet or so... Hence most Trolleybuses and the LT petrol / oil buses (one featured in Ask a Policeman ) had 6 wheels ** Ah, but 2-axle buses have 4 wheels on the back axle!! ** Extra-long 3-axle ones have 8 wheels altogether. And that's just the conductor! <CLIPPIE Hey, I didn't writted dat!! I edited it! Where's me hammer. I'll show you . . . (Grams: Thwakkk!) Bottule: Owwww! My nuttttt! Clippie still?? How long ago is it since we had different coloured tickets with the fare stages round the edges and the conductor used to clip them at the stage you got on at?? ** About 50 years. ** (Printed by the Bell Punch Co. or Williamsons Printers, Ashton) Bell Punch tickets were still being used as emergency tickets occasionally until Ken got rid of the fare stages and zones with the one price fare..... The buses don't even go Ding ding! anymore. They still go Brrrrrrrrmmmm though - except the new Fuel-Cell ones. They just whine quietly so you don't hear them coming! ** Just like a trolleybus, only many times more expensive. You REALLY think you could leave all that lovely copper overhead wire unattended in North East London without a bit getting borrowed? ** Actually it's phosphor-bronze as pure copper is too ductile, but it is 90-95% copper with tin and a small amount of phosphorus. *vision of locals with scrap written across both enlarged pupils* Why the phosphorus?
