You can't have two clades intersecting without one being a (not necessarily proper) sub-set of the other. Either all mammals are monotremes (clearly not the case), or all monotremes are mammals, or none are. And anyway, which monotreme would not be a mammal? They all have hair, milk glands, thermal regulation, and the mammal middle ear. All two of them... Five. The platypus, the short-nosed echidna, and three species of long-nosed echidna. Richard
