Tommy = Space Man Ace Frehley = Kiss Naah. I'd say if there was any one magic ingredient to the original KISS sound, it was Peter Criss's drumming. Everyone in the KISS camp was too dumb to understand that by 1979 though. I still think they're all too dumb to understand it. But listen to Destroyer and Love Gun, then listen to Dynasty and Unmasked. Peter was a HUGE part of the KISS sound, and anything to the contrary is a myth perpetuated by Gene and Paul. That's my opinion, and as usual I'll probably not be in big company.

. And Ace I only saw at the Rock Honors in Las Vegas about a month and a half ago, when Ace joined a Kiss tribute band made up of Tommy Lee and Rob Zombie. He played in that band, but he is not allowed to wear the makeup anymore. I don't think that's quite accurate.  My understanding some years back was Ace sold the rights to his makeup to a lawyer to pay off a major debt to the guy.  Gene bought the rights from that lawyer. This makes absolutely no difference whatsoever, the end result was the same. The fact is, nobody is to blame for Ace not owning the rights anymore except for Mr. Ace Frehley himself.

He also chose to leave Kiss, chose to pour alcohol down his throat for years, chose to drive drunk - and apparantly he didn't even want to take responsibility for THAT, I read that after the accident he asked his friend to tell the cops he was driving (Kiss and Tell). Gene is right what he says about drugs and alcohol, once you start doing that you'll lose everything. I thought that statement was a bit dramatic when I first read it (in either Kiss Money Sex, or his other book I forget the _title_), but you know it's true. It's the people who stay sober and clean and make good decisions who become and remain successful.

And what did they do?  They put the makeup back on and rebuilt their fortunes.  They let the money go down the toilet, then they got it back.  Not many bands, other than maybe Aerosmith, have been able to basically lose it all, then get it all back.
