John wrote that inhumane methods are acceptable to you now, and you implicitly acknowledge that they are. Certainly not. But the reality is that social change can only happen incrementally, through the identification of specific, achievable targets. Inhumane methods of pest control are not acceptable, but are - perhaps - less *un*acceptable than the cruelties inherent in the meat trade. So it makes sense to concentrate on the one, before switching attention to the other (although this does not mean ignoring it totally). It is also, of course, the case that the widespread adoption of a veggie diet would probably make it easier to takle the pest control problem - as the public's identification with other sentient creatures would have been nurtured. It is difficult to see how the change could be effected the other way round. That would depend on how the vegetarian diet came to be adopted . I generally have the sense that it would be imposed , not adopted. If so, there's no logic behind the assertion that there would be an increased level of concern for sentient animals. The ex-Soviet Union and the formerly redder China both tried to adopt an economic and moral system that discouraged consumerism. Their subjugated masses never bought it.

Martin: Your second sentence is inconsistent with the first sentence. Rights aren't things that people possess but the result of social interactions. Remove the interactions and rights disappear. No contradiction. To say that an indivisual possesses something need not imply that it constitutes an inherent property. You may well possess a driving licence, for example, but it still emerges from the web of social interactions . I wrote The question is: what are these characteristics? To suggest that these rights belong to all humans but not to other animals fails the test of impartiality: Martin There's no such test or requirement. You are making up conditions to fit your theory. You are seriously suggesting that there is no test of fairness to apply when identifying rights-holders? In that case, upon what basis do you _object_ to racial or gender discrimination? There is no test. All human beings are deemed to have human rights by virtue of being human.

2) The deforrestation problem is a real one (unlike the global warming hoax) but you are blaming the wrong people. Those doing it are primarily third world producers, not big cattle industries. I don't see the relevence of the distinction ; I was responding to the statement that cattle do little damage to the landscape .
