the meaning of prom MEANING OF Boot PROM?  
I am setting up a home network for the first time.  My NICs have the ability to configure Boot PROM but I can't find an explanation of what it does.  I am hoping it sets the NIC into promiscuous mode.  Help appreciated.

I am setting up a home network for the first time.  My NICs have the ability to configure Boot PROM but I can't find an explanation of what it does.  I am hoping it sets the NIC into promiscuous mode.  Help appreciated. Nope. Promiscuous mode is handled by the operating system. Why do you want that? A boot PROM is a ROM from the NIC vendor or the OS vendor that allows the NIC to load the OS from a server instead of the local hard disk. It's intended for diskless systems, or systems where the local disk is used only as a cache, not as a boot device.

A boot PROM is a ROM from the NIC vendor or the OS vendor that allows the NIC to load the OS from a server instead of the local hard disk. It's intended for diskless systems, or systems where the local disk is used only as a cache, not as a boot device. A boot PROM will likely implement a standalone version of a BOOTP or DHCP client. It might implement a standalone version of a TFTP client.
